Our two fall journeys to Xalapa (Coatepec) and Tuxtla-Guiterrez in Mexico
The dates are confirmed for our two journeys to southern Mexico in the fall of this year. Now is the time to plan for the trip if you are interested in going. The dates are:
Xalapa (Coatepec) - October 26th to November 1st 2025
Tuxtla Guiterrez – November 1st to November 7th.
Both journeys are to southern Mexico with its unique history and indigenous (mostly Mayan) culture These journeys will be unlike Mexico City and the several coastal resort towns I have been to previously. Xalapa (ha-la-pa) is near the Gulf of Mexico coast in the state of Veracruz. It is a lively college town and has the second largest anthropological museum in Mexico. Nearby Coatepec (namesake of the club) is a small center for coffee agriculture and colonial history on the side of a mountain in the Naolinco volcanic area. The state of Veracruz was home to the ancient Olmecs, the mysterious predecessors to the Mayan and Aztec cultures.
Tuxtla-Guiterrez (tux-too-la-gu-ti-air-ez) is a modern city, further south in the state of Chiapas, about 450 miles from Xalapa, surrounded by the mountains and jungle of southern Mexico that border Guatemala. The city itself is at low elevation, about 2000 feet. We will probably visit the nearby waterfalls and Sumidero canyon and a famous zoo. Rural Chiapas is home to the modern Mayan people with their own languages, including “Tsotsil”. Spanish is a second language in Chiapas.
We might extend the journeys a bit with a guided bus side-trip between Xalapa and Tuxtla-Gutierrez. Mexico City is the air connection point for both cities with a jump-off to home and other possible side trips. The best flights are on Delta/Areomexico. We fly out to Herioca-Verzacruz and take the shuttle to Xalapa (2-hours). There is an excellent afternoon flight from the Tuxtla-Gutierrez international airport to San Francisco for our return. The cost seems to be $600 to $700 for an open-jaw reservation and a bit more with an air connection between the Journeys.
