Deciding whether to believe the latest hot news about health matters isn't a simple process. Medical librarians wrestle all the time with the problems of finding trust-worthy and accurate sources for consumer health information, and with fact-checking and evaluating reports of medical research. This program will share the main techniques in librarians' toolboxes for deciding whether to trust health claims, or trash them -- even if you're not already an expert on that subject. These skills are what the phrase "do your own research" *should* mean: learning to tell which research methods or reports are relevant to medical care, and which are self-promotion or just exploring interesting ideas. Questions and comments are welcome.
Lise Dyckman's over 30-year career as a research and reference librarian has been spread between universities (NYU, UC Berkeley), teaching hospitals (Sequoia Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center), several graduate schools (most recently CIIS and JFK University), research institutes (including California Medical Association), and public library settings. In several of those settings she taught research methods classes, and she has published professionally on information-seeking behavior. But the core of her work has always revolved around helping people find the information they need to answer questions both personal and professional.
We will be inviting fellow travelers and members of other domestic FF clubs to "drop in" and join us! Feel free to invite your FFI associates from other cities.
